Knee High is a dwarf sweet pea mix (Lathyrus odoratus) that blooms in a bright blend of colors on bushy plants just 18–24 inches tall — no tall trellis required. You get the classic ruffled flowers and fragrance of climbing sweet peas in a compact form made for borders, edging, and containers. Note: sweet pea seeds are harmful if eaten; grow for flowers only.
Why choose our seeds?
- All the fragrance and ruffled blooms of sweet peas — in compact, knee-high plants
- Mixed colors for a cheerful, old-fashioned display
- No tall trellis needed; great for borders, edging, and pots
How to grow Knee High Sweet Pea Mix seeds
Choose Your Planting Method
- Indoors: Start 4–6 weeks before the last frost in deep pots.
- Outdoors: Direct sow in early spring as soon as the soil can be worked; sweet peas prefer cool weather.
Prepare Your Materials
- Seed-starting trays or pots (if indoors)
- Well-draining potting mix
- Spray bottle for misting
Sowing the Seeds
- Nick each seed coat with nail clippers and soak overnight in warm water to speed sprouting.
- Sow 1/2 to 1 inch deep.
Provide the Right Conditions
- Light: Full sun to part shade.
- Temperature: 55–70°F (13–21°C) — cool soil germinates best.
Germination
- Seedlings emerge in 7–14 days; some seeds take up to 21 days.
- Keep soil moist but not waterlogged.
Transplanting
- Plant out in early spring while the weather is cool.
- Space seeds 2–3 inches apart, then thin to 5–6 inches; set transplants about 9 inches apart.
- Short pea sticks or a small fence help keep plants tidy, but a tall trellis is not required.
Care Tips
- Sun: Full sun; afternoon shade helps in hot summers.
- Water: Water regularly; rich, well-drained soil gives the best bloom.
- Fertilizer: Feed every two weeks once flowering begins.
- Pinch the growing tips after the second leaf pair opens for bushier plants, and cut or deadhead often to extend flowering.
Bloom Time:
Early summer to late summer; longest in cool weather.
