Knee High Mix Sweet Pea (Lathyrus odoratus) is a dwarf, bushy sweet pea reaching about knee height, so little or no tall trellis is needed. It offers fragrant blooms in mixed colors for edging, containers and cutting. Note: sweet pea seeds and plants are poisonous if eaten.

Why choose our seeds?

  • Dwarf habit that needs little or no support
  • Fragrant blooms in a mix of colors
  • Cut-and-come-again flowering from early to late summer

How to grow Knee High Mix Sweet Pea seeds

Choose Your Planting Method

  • Indoors: Start in deep pots in late winter.
  • Outdoors: Direct sow in fall in mild climates, or very early spring as soon as the soil is workable - seedlings tolerate light frost.

Prepare Your Materials

  • Deep pots or root trainers (if indoors)
  • Rich, well-drained soil with compost
  • Small supports, canes or a low trellis

Sowing the Seeds

  • Nick the hard seed coat gently or soak seeds overnight to speed germination.
  • Sow 1/2 to 1 inch deep - seeds need darkness to sprout.

Provide the Right Conditions

  • Light: Darkness aids germination; bright light after sprouting.
  • Temperature: Cool - 50-65°F (10-18°C).

Germination

  • Seedlings typically emerge in 7-21 days.
  • Grow on cool and bright to keep plants stocky.

Transplanting

  • Plant out in early spring; harden off first.
  • Space plants 6-8 inches apart with small supports in place.

Care Tips

  • Sun: Full sun.
  • Water: Water deeply and consistently, especially while flowering.
  • Fertilizer: Use a low-nitrogen feed to favor blooms over leafy growth.
  • Pinch the growing tip at 4-6 inches for bushier plants; pick or deadhead often to keep flowers coming.

Bloom Time:

Early summer to late summer.
