Kilimanjaro African Marigold (Tagetes erecta) is a tall, large-flowered marigold with big, fully double blooms in warm sunset shades, on strong stems reaching about 3 feet. African marigolds are summer workhorses for beds, borders, and cutting, blooming for months from an early indoor start. They are also valued as companion plants in the vegetable garden.

Why choose our seeds?

  • Large, fully double blooms on tall, strong-stemmed plants
  • Long summer bloom season from an early indoor start
  • Excellent cut flowers and a classic companion plant for vegetables

How to grow Kilimanjaro African Marigold seeds

Choose Your Planting Method

  • Indoors: Start 4-6 weeks before your last frost.
  • Outdoors: Direct sow after the last frost.

Prepare Your Materials

  • Seed-starting trays or pots
  • Well-draining seed-starting mix
  • Spray bottle for misting

Sowing the Seeds

  • Sow about 1/4 inch deep and cover lightly with mix.
  • Keep the mix evenly moist but not soggy.

Provide the Right Conditions

  • Light: Bright light after sprouting.
  • Temperature: 75-80°F (24-27°C) for the fastest germination.

Germination

  • Seeds germinate in 4-7 days at warm temperatures.
  • Grow seedlings on in strong light to keep them stocky.

Transplanting

  • Plant out after all danger of frost, spacing plants 12-18 inches apart.
  • Pinch young plants once to encourage branching.

Care Tips

  • Sun: Full sun for the most blooms.
  • Water: Water regularly; marigolds dislike drying out completely in hot weather.
  • Fertilizer: A light feeding at planting is enough; too much nitrogen gives foliage at the expense of flowers.
  • Deadhead spent blooms regularly to keep new buds coming.

Bloom Time:

Summer to fall; plants bloom continuously until frost.
