Kelgai Ann is a dahlia variety (Dahlia pinnata) grown from seed. Dahlias started from seed are one of gardening's best surprises: they bloom in their very first season, and because each seed grows into a genetically unique plant, no two seedlings are exactly alike. Start them early indoors and they will fill beds and borders with full, showy blooms from midsummer until frost.
Why choose our seeds?
- Blooms the first year from an early indoor start, with full, showy flower heads
- Each seedling is unique, so you may discover forms and color blends no one else has
- Excellent for beds, borders, and cutting; regular cutting keeps new buds coming
How to grow Kelgai Ann Dahlia seeds
Choose Your Planting Method
- Indoors: Start 4-8 weeks before your last frost; direct seeding outdoors is not recommended.
- Outdoors: Transplant seedlings outdoors only after all danger of frost has passed and nights stay above 50°F (10°C).
Prepare Your Materials
- Seed-starting trays or pots
- Well-draining seed-starting mix
- Bright grow light or sunny windowsill
- Spray bottle for misting
Sowing the Seeds
- Sow seeds 1/4-1/2 inch deep and press the mix down gently for good seed contact.
- Keep the mix evenly moist but not soggy.
Provide the Right Conditions
- Light: Bright light after sprouting; seedlings stretch quickly in dim conditions.
- Temperature: 68-74°F (20-23°C).
Germination
- Seeds germinate in 7-14 days; some may take up to two weeks, so do not discard the tray early.
- Give seedlings strong light and good air circulation from the start.
Transplanting
- Harden seedlings off gradually over about a week before moving them out.
- Transplant after the last frost, spacing plants about 12 inches (30 cm) apart in rich, well-drained soil.
Care Tips
- Sun: Full sun for the strongest stems and most blooms.
- Water: Water deeply twice a week once established; keep young transplants evenly moist.
- Fertilizer: Dahlias appreciate rich, compost-amended soil; feed established plants through the season.
- Stake tall-growing seedlings before they topple, and deadhead spent blooms to keep flowers coming.
Bloom Time:
Midsummer to the first hard frost.
