Kalanchoe blossfeldiana is the familiar florist's kalanchoe — a compact succulent with clusters of small, bright flowers. Grown from seed it makes a fun indoor project. Note: named flower colors do not come true from seed, so blooms will vary.

Why choose our seeds?

  • Clusters of small, bright four-petalled flowers
  • Succulent leaves that store water — forgiving of an occasional missed watering
  • Compact plants for sunny windowsills and containers

How to grow Kalanchoe seeds

Choose Your Planting Method

  • Indoors: Sow indoors at any time; late-winter sowing can give blooms the same year.
  • Outdoors: An indoor plant in most climates; grow outdoors only where frost never occurs.

Prepare Your Materials

  • Seed-starting trays or pots (if indoors)
  • Well-draining potting mix
  • Humidity dome or plastic wrap to hold moisture
  • Spray bottle for misting

Sowing the Seeds

  • Surface-sow the dust-fine seeds on cactus/succulent or seed-starting mix; press lightly and do not cover.
  • No pre-treatment is needed.

Provide the Right Conditions

  • Light: Bright, indirect light; keep seedlings out of harsh direct sun.
  • Temperature: 70-75°F (21-24°C).
  • Humidity: Cover with a clear lid or film until sprouts appear, then remove it.

Germination

  • 7-14 days; germination can be uneven.
  • Remove the cover at the first sprouting; keep lightly moist but never soggy — fine seedlings damp off easily.

Transplanting

  • Prick out into small individual pots of well-draining cactus/succulent mix when seedlings are large enough to handle.
  • One seedling per small pot; move up pot sizes as plants grow.

Care Tips

  • Sun: Bright light; established plants enjoy some direct sun but scorch in harsh midday heat.
  • Water: Let the top of the mix dry out between waterings — kalanchoe dislikes wet feet.
  • Fertilizer: Feed lightly with diluted balanced fertilizer during active growth.
  • Kalanchoe blooms when nights are long — short days in fall and winter trigger flowering.

Bloom Time:

Typically winter to early spring indoors, once plants experience short days.
