Jung Green Yu Choy Sum (Brassica rapa var. parachinensis), also called Chinese flowering cabbage, is a fast-growing Asian green grown for its tender stems, dark green leaves, and sweet yellow flower buds. It has a mild, slightly sweet flavor that shines in stir-fries, soups, and steaming. This medium-maturing variety tolerates warm weather, making it well suited for summer and autumn sowing. This packet contains 20 seeds.

Growing Instructions

  • When to Plant: Sow in spring, late summer, or autumn. It grows best at 59-79°F (15-26°C); temperatures below 50-54°F (10-12°C) can cause premature bolting.
  • Soil: Fertile, well-draining soil with consistent moisture.
  • Sunlight: Full sun.
  • Watering: Keep the bed evenly moist; fast, unstressed growth keeps stems tender and sweet.
  • Spacing: Sow about 1/2 inch (10 mm) deep and thin seedlings to about 6 inches (15 cm) apart.
  • Germination: Germination takes 7-14 days at 59-79°F (15-26°C).
  • Harvest: Wait until flower buds have formed but cut the stems before the yellow flowers open. Cut the main stem just above the lowest leaf node - the plant will push out side shoots for a second and third harvest.
  • Tips: Sow a short row every couple of weeks for a steady supply. Cover young seedlings with row cover to protect against flea beetles and cabbage worms.
