Japanese Pennywort is a low, creeping plant with small, rounded, clover-like leaves that form a soft green carpet. It is most often grown in terrariums, paludariums, and aquariums, or as a moisture-loving groundcover in warm, humid spots — valued for its foliage rather than its tiny, inconspicuous flowers.
Why choose our seeds?
- Delicate, creeping foliage that carpets moist soil or terrarium floors
- A natural fit for aquariums, terrariums, and humid indoor plantings
- Low, spreading habit that fills in around other moisture-loving plants
How to grow Japanese Pennywort seeds
Choose Your Planting Method
- Indoors: Sow in a shallow tray or directly into the terrarium or container where it will grow.
- Outdoors: Sow in a warm, sheltered, consistently moist spot after frost.
Prepare Your Materials
- Shallow tray, terrarium, or container
- Moisture-retentive, well-draining mix
- Clear cover or humidity dome to hold moisture
- Spray bottle for misting
Sowing the Seeds
- Surface-sow the tiny seeds on moist mix and press gently for contact; do not bury them.
- Mist well and cover to keep humidity high.
Provide the Right Conditions
- Light: Bright, indirect light; avoid harsh direct sun on young seedlings.
- Temperature: 70–75°F (21–24°C); warmth and humidity favor sprouting.
- Humidity: Keep the surface constantly moist and the air humid.
Germination
- Germination is slow and uneven; keep conditions steady and do not let the surface dry out.
- Ventilate briefly if mold appears, then re-cover.
Transplanting
- Move small clumps with their root mass intact once they form a mat.
- Set plants close together — about 2–4 inches apart — so they knit into a carpet.
Care Tips
- Sun: Bright indirect light, or partial shade outdoors.
- Water: Keep the soil consistently moist; this plant dislikes drying out.
- Fertilizer: Very light feeding only, if at all.
- Trim runners to keep the planting neat and to encourage denser growth.
Bloom Time:
Grown for its foliage; any flowers are tiny and insignificant, so bloom timing is not a feature of this plant.
