Growing Instructions
- When to Plant: Sow early spring for a spring harvest, and again 4–6 weeks before the first frost for fall. Sow spring plantings early, since komatsuna bolts a bit earlier than other mustards.
- Soil: Fertile, well-draining soil; add compost before sowing.
- Sunlight: Full sun; tolerates some shade.
- Watering: Keep soil moderately moist.
- Spacing: Sow 1/4 in deep in rows 18 in apart. Thin to 6 in apart; enjoy the thinnings in salads.
- Germination: 7–14 days.
- Harvest: Snip outer leaves when young for the best flavor, leaving the center to keep growing — or cut whole plants at maturity. Allow plants to regrow for a second cutting.
- Tips: Sow every 2–4 weeks for a continuous supply. Mulch with straw to hold soil moisture.
