  • Flowers the first year from seed — no tubers needed
  • Superb cut flower for borders and bouquets

How to grow Hollyhill Serenity Dahlia seeds

Choose Your Planting Method

  • Indoors: Start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost — strongly recommended for the longest bloom season.
  • Outdoors: Sow outdoors 2-4 weeks after the last frost, once the soil is warm.

Prepare Your Materials

  • Seed-starting trays or pots (if indoors)
  • Well-draining potting mix
  • Biodegradable pots if possible — dahlia roots dislike disturbance
  • Clear plastic wrap or a humidity dome
  • Spray bottle for misting

Sowing the Seeds

  • Sow seeds about 1/4 inch deep in moist seed-starting mix
  • Keep the medium evenly moist but never soggy

Provide the Right Conditions

  • Light: Bright, indirect light after sowing
  • Temperature: 65-70°F (18-21°C)
  • Humidity: Cover lightly until germination, then ventilate

Germination

  • Seeds germinate in 5-20 days
  • Grow seedlings on in bright light so they stay stocky

Transplanting

  • Transplant after all frost danger has passed — dahlias are frost-sensitive
  • Harden off over 7-10 days
  • Space plants 18-24 inches apart

Care Tips

  • Sun: Full sun for the heaviest bloom
  • Water: Water deeply and regularly; avoid waterlogging
  • Fertilizer: Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer every 2-4 weeks during the growing season
  • Deadhead spent flowers regularly to keep new blooms coming
  • Note: seedlings grown from seed of a named variety may vary somewhat from the parent plant

Bloom Time:

Midsummer until the first frost, about 90 days from sowing.
