- Long bloom season from early summer until frost
- Dramatic back-of-border plant and excellent cut flower
How to grow Helen Campbell Cleome seeds
Choose Your Planting Method
- Indoors: Sow indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost.
- Outdoors: Direct sow outdoors 1–2 weeks before the last spring frost date.
Prepare Your Materials
- Seed-starting trays or pots (if indoors)
- Well-draining potting mix
- Spray bottle for misting
Sowing the Seeds
- Surface-sow and press in lightly — cleome seeds need light to germinate.
- Chilling the sown tray in the refrigerator for about 2 weeks before warming can improve germination.
Provide the Right Conditions
- Light: Bright light; seedlings need strong light to grow stocky.
- Temperature: Around 60–70°F (16–21°C).
Germination
- Seedlings usually appear in 10–21 days.
- Grow on in a bright spot until plants are sturdy enough to plant out.
Transplanting
- Set out after the last frost.
- Harden off indoor-started plants for a week before planting out.
- Spacing: Space plants 18–24 inches (45–60 cm) apart.
Care Tips
- Sun: Full sun in regular, well-drained soil.
- Water: Water regularly until established; afterwards water only during dry spells.
- Fertilizer: Mix a couple of inches of compost into the soil before planting.
- Pinch once when plants are about 6 inches tall for bushier plants; note the small thorns on the stems when handling.
Bloom Time:
Blooms from early summer until frost, about 12 weeks from sowing.
