- A rewarding project for patient gardeners who enjoy the full growing process
- Suitable for starting indoors, with plants moved to the garden once established
How to grow Green and White Striped Rose seeds
Choose Your Planting Method
- Indoors: Start the cold stratification first: place seeds in a damp paper towel or damp vermiculite inside a sealed bag, and refrigerate for 2-3 months at 35-39°F (2-4°C) to break dormancy. Then sow indoors 8-12 weeks before the last frost.
- Outdoors: Direct sowing outdoors is not recommended for most gardeners; controlled indoor starting after stratification gives the best chance of success.
Prepare Your Materials
- Seed-starting trays or pots (if indoors)
- Well-draining potting mix
- Humidity dome or plastic wrap to hold moisture
- Spray bottle for misting
Sowing the Seeds
- Scarify the seed coat gently with fine sandpaper before stratification to help moisture enter.
- After stratification, sow 1/4 inch deep in moist, well-draining seed-starting mix.
Provide the Right Conditions
- Light: bright, indirect light
- Temperature: around 70-75°F (21-24°C) after stratification
Germination
- Germination is slow and uneven, often taking several weeks to a few months.
- Some seeds may even begin sprouting while still in the refrigerator; plant those sprouts carefully.
Transplanting
- Move seedlings to individual pots once they have true leaves.
- Harden off for a week or two before setting plants outdoors after the last frost.
- Space young plants 18-24 inches apart in the garden.
Care Tips
- Sun: full sun once plants are moved outdoors.
- Water: keep soil evenly moist; mulch around established plants.
- Seedlings grow slowly at first; flowering usually begins after the plant has had a full season of growth.
- Note: seedlings from striped parents may show a range of bloom patterns, which is part of the fun of seed-grown roses.
Bloom Time:
Roses grown from seed typically need a full season of growth before flowering; established plants bloom in their normal season.
