Golden Builder lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) is a sacred lotus grown from seed for its spectacular bowl-shaped blooms and dramatic round leaves that rise above the water. Lotus is one of the most rewarding water plants to raise from seed, since properly prepared seeds sprout quickly.
Grow it in a large bowl, tub, or pond in full sun. Seed-grown lotus generally takes until its second growing season to flower, so the first year is about building a strong tuber.
Why choose our seeds?
- Classic sacred lotus with showy blooms and dramatic umbrella-like leaves
- Sprouts in days from properly nicked and soaked seed
- For bowls, tubs, and ponds in full sun
How to grow Golden Builder Lotus seeds
Choose Your Planting Method
- Indoors: Start indoors in warm water any time you can keep conditions warm.
- Outdoors: Outdoor sowing only in warm weather, in a frost-free pond or tub.
Prepare Your Materials
- Seed-starting trays or pots (if indoors)
- Well-draining potting mix
- A small file or sandpaper for nicking the seed coat
- A clear glass or jar and a wide, soil-filled container or pond for planting
- Spray bottle for misting
Sowing the Seeds
- File or nick the hard seed coat at the rounded, dimpled end — taking care not to damage the embryo inside — until the cream interior just shows.
- Soak in warm 75–85°F (24–29°C) water, changing the water daily; viable seeds usually swell and sprout within 1 to 7 days.
Provide the Right Conditions
- Light: Full sun; warmth drives sprouting and growth.
- Temperature: 75–85°F (24–29°C) water for sprouting.
- Humidity: Aquatic — seeds sprout submerged in water.
Germination
- Sprouts typically emerge in 1 to 7 days after nicking and soaking.
- Keep the sprout in warm, shallow water, changing it daily until planting.
Transplanting
- When the sprout is 4 to 6 inches long, gently press the seed into heavy clay or aquatic planting media, keeping the growing tip exposed, under 2 to 4 inches of water.
- Spacing: One plant per large container; give the tuber room to spread.
Care Tips
- Sun: Full sun — at least 6 hours daily for flowering.
- Water: Aquatic; keep the container filled. Use still water, not a fountain jet on the plant.
- Fertilizer: A slow-release aquatic fertilizer tablet pressed into the soil once plants are established and growing strongly.
- Bring tubs indoors or below the freeze line before hard frosts in cold climates.
Bloom Time:
Foliage the first season; seed-grown plants generally flower from their second growing season onward in full sun.
