'Frost Nip' dahlias grown from seed produce bushy, free-flowering plants with open, daisy-like blooms the very first summer. Dahlias cross-pollinate readily, so seedlings vary in color and form — expect a delightful mix rather than identical plants.

Why choose our seeds?

  • Bushy plants with open single blooms the first summer from seed
  • Seedlings vary in color and form, so each plant is a surprise
  • Long season of flowers for beds, borders and cutting

How to grow Frost Nip Dahlia seeds

Choose Your Planting Method

  • Indoors: Start indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost.
  • Outdoors: Sow outdoors after the last frost, once the soil has warmed to at least 65°F (18°C).

Prepare Your Materials

  • Seed-starting trays or pots (if indoors)
  • Well-draining potting mix
  • Spray bottle for misting

Sowing the Seeds

  • Sow 1/4 inch deep in seed-starting mix; no special pre-treatment is needed.
  • Keep the mix evenly moist but not soggy.

Provide the Right Conditions

  • Light: Bright light after sowing — a sunny windowsill or grow lights.
  • Temperature: 70°F (21°C) or warmer.

Germination

  • 7-14 days.
  • Prick out seedlings into individual pots once they have their first true leaves; keep them warm and bright.

Transplanting

  • After all danger of frost has passed, when seedlings have 1-2 sets of true leaves.
  • Harden off over 7-10 days.
  • About 12 inches apart.

Care Tips

  • Sun: Full sun.
  • Water: Water deeply a couple of times a week; keep the soil evenly moist, especially in hot weather.
  • Fertilizer: Plant in rich, compost-amended soil and feed lightly through the season.
  • Deadhead spent blooms to keep flowers coming; stake taller plants before they flop.

Bloom Time:

Summer through fall, until the first frost.
