Fireweed (Chamerion angustifolium) is the tall pioneer wildflower of burned and cleared ground, sending up stately spikes of vivid pink-purple flowers in summer. In the garden it makes a dramatic back-of-border plant — but give it room, as it spreads by underground rhizomes once established.
Why choose our seeds?
- Tall spikes of vivid pink flowers in summer
- Tough, adaptable wildflower for sunny, open spots
- Spreads by rhizomes to form generous drifts — plan space accordingly
How to grow Fireweed seeds
Choose Your Planting Method
- Indoors: Surface-sow indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost.
- Outdoors: Scatter outdoors in early spring as soon as the soil can be worked, or in fall for natural winter stratification.
Prepare Your Materials
- Seed-starting trays or pots (if indoors)
- Well-draining potting mix
- Humidity dome or plastic wrap to hold moisture
- Spray bottle for misting
Sowing the Seeds
- Surface-sow: press the tiny seeds into moist mix and do not cover — seeds need light to germinate.
- Mist to keep the surface evenly moist.
Provide the Right Conditions
- Light: Bright light.
- Temperature: 60-68°F (15-20°C).
- Humidity: A humidity dome or misting keeps the fine seeds from drying out.
Germination
- 1-3 weeks.
- Seedlings are small and slow at first; thin or pot up when they have a few true leaves.
Transplanting
- After the last frost, when seedlings are sturdy.
- Harden off before planting out.
- 12-18 inches apart.
Care Tips
- Sun: Full sun.
- Water: Keep evenly moist; avoid waterlogged soil.
- Fertilizer: Generally not needed — heavy feeding can reduce flowering.
- Cut spent flower spikes before they open into fluff if you want to limit self-seeding.
Bloom Time:
Summer; plants can reach 6 feet tall in good conditions.
