Elegant Blue Hibiscus is a Rose of Sharon (Hibiscus syriacus) with soft blue blooms on a deciduous flowering shrub. It flowers from mid-summer into fall, when few shrubs are still blooming.

Why choose our seeds?

  • Soft blue blooms on a deciduous flowering shrub
  • Flowers from mid-summer into fall, extending the garden season
  • Easy to grow in average, well-drained soil

How to grow Elegant Blue Hibiscus seeds

Choose Your Planting Method

  • Indoors: Start seeds indoors 6-12 weeks before the last frost.
  • Outdoors: Direct sow after the last frost, once the soil has warmed.

Prepare Your Materials

  • Seed-starting trays or pots (if indoors)
  • Well-draining potting mix
  • Fine sandpaper for scarifying
  • Clear plastic wrap or a humidity dome
  • Spray bottle for misting

Sowing the Seeds

  • Nick the hard seed coat lightly with fine sandpaper, then soak seeds in warm water overnight
  • Sow about 1/4-1/2 inch deep in moist seed-starting mix

Provide the Right Conditions

  • Light: Bright light
  • Temperature: 70°F (21°C) and above; warmth speeds germination
  • Humidity: Cover with plastic wrap or a dome to hold warmth and moisture

Germination

  • Expect germination in 14-21 days after scarifying and soaking
  • Without pretreatment, germination can take a month or more

Transplanting

  • Transplant after all frost danger has passed
  • Take care not to disturb the taproot
  • Space plants 36 inches apart

Care Tips

  • Sun: Full sun to partial shade
  • Water: Water regularly the first season; established shrubs tolerate dry spells
  • Fertilizer: A balanced slow-release feed in spring supports flowering
  • Pinch young plants at 6-8 inches tall to encourage branching

Bloom Time:

Mid-summer through fall.
