Edelweiss (Leontopodium alpinum) is the legendary flower of the Alps, with star-shaped, woolly white blooms rising above silvery, felted foliage. This short-lived perennial is made for rock gardens, alpine troughs, and sunny, gritty borders. Its seeds are tiny and need light to sprout, and germination calls for patience rather than skill.

Why choose our seeds?

  • Iconic star-like, woolly white flower heads with silvery foliage
  • A classic alpine plant for rockeries, troughs, and container plantings
  • Long-lived display once established in sharp drainage

How to grow Edelweiss seeds

Choose Your Planting Method

  • Indoors: Start 4-8 weeks before your last frost for the strongest seedlings.
  • Outdoors: Direct sow in spring or fall in a prepared, gritty seed bed.

Prepare Your Materials

  • Seed trays or pots
  • Free-draining seed compost mixed with grit or coarse sand
  • Clear plastic bag or humidity dome
  • Spray bottle for misting

Sowing the Seeds

  • Press seeds lightly onto the surface of the compost; do not cover them, as light is required for germination.
  • Seal the container in a plastic bag to hold moisture.

Provide the Right Conditions

  • Light: Do not exclude light at any stage; brightness aids germination.
  • Temperature: 59-68°F (15-20°C).

Germination

  • Germination takes 21-35 days and can stretch to two months; keep the compost moist and do not give up early.
  • Transplant seedlings to small pots when large enough to handle and grow on in a sheltered spot.

Transplanting

  • Plant out 4-6 inches apart once plants are well grown.
  • Choose a sunny spot with sharply drained, neutral to slightly alkaline soil; plants are more silvery in lean, gritty soils.

Care Tips

  • Sun: Full sun; cool summer climates are preferred.
  • Water: Water sparingly once established; edelweiss does not tolerate wet feet.
  • Fertilizer: Lean soil suits this alpine; little or no feeding is needed.
  • Protect from excessive wetness in winter with sharp drainage and, in wet climates, a rain-sheltered position.
