How to grow Double Dutch White Cosmos seeds
Choose Your Planting Method
- Indoors: Start indoors 4-6 weeks before your last frost date.
- Outdoors: Direct sow after all danger of frost has passed — direct sowing is the simplest and most reliable method.
Prepare Your Materials
- Seed-starting trays or pots (if indoors)
- Well-draining potting mix
- Spray bottle for misting
Sowing the Seeds
- Sow about 1/8-1/4 inch deep and cover lightly with soil.
- Keep the soil evenly moist until seedlings emerge.
Provide the Right Conditions
- Light: Full sun.
- Temperature: 68-72°F (20-22°C) for germination; soil around 60-65°F (16-18°C) for direct sowing.
Germination
- 7-10 days in warm soil (up to about 3 weeks outdoors in cooler weather).
- Thin seedlings to the strongest plants once they are a few inches tall.
Transplanting
- If started indoors, transplant after the last frost while seedlings are still small.
- Spacing: 9-12 inches apart
Care Tips
- Sun: Full sun.
- Water: Water to establish; cosmos handle dry spells once growing but bloom best with regular moisture.
- Fertilizer: Go easy on fertilizer — rich soil and heavy feeding produce leaves at the expense of flowers.
- Deadhead regularly to prolong flowering.
- Pinch the growing tips of young plants to encourage branching and more blooms.
Bloom Time:
Mid-summer until frost.
