Dichondra Repens is a creeping, low-growing groundcover with round, clover-like leaves that forms a soft green carpet. It is widely used as a lawn alternative where grass struggles, between stepping stones, and spilling over walls and containers.

Why choose our seeds?

  • Dense, low carpet of rounded bright-green leaves — no mowing needed for a natural look
  • Tolerates light foot traffic, making it a practical lawn substitute in warm areas
  • Grows in full sun to part shade and fills in quickly from seed

How to grow Dichondra Repens seeds

Choose Your Planting Method

  • Indoors: Sow indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost in warm conditions.
  • Outdoors: Sow outdoors in spring or summer when daytime temperatures are above 68°F (20°C) and nights stay above 50°F (10°C).

Prepare Your Materials

  • Seed-starting trays or pots (if indoors)
  • Well-draining potting mix
  • Spray bottle for misting

Sowing the Seeds

  • Surface sow — press seeds gently into moist, finely prepared soil but do not cover; they need light to germinate
  • Keep the seedbed consistently moist (not soggy) until germination — light, frequent watering works best

Provide the Right Conditions

  • Light: Bright light; full sun to part shade once growing
  • Temperature: 70-75°F (21-24°C) for germination

Germination

  • Seeds germinate in 7-14 days in warm, moist conditions
  • Keep young seedlings evenly moist until well established

Transplanting

  • Transplant seedlings after frost danger has passed
  • Harden off over 7-10 days
  • Space plants about 12 inches apart — runners will fill the gaps

Care Tips

  • Sun: Full sun to part shade; tolerates full shade but grows more slowly
  • Water: Water deeply but less often once established — dichondra suffers more from overwatering than from slight dryness
  • Fertilizer: A light application of balanced fertilizer at planting is enough; avoid heavy feeding
  • Mow to about 2 inches if grown as a lawn, or leave unmowed as a natural groundcover

Bloom Time:

Grown for its foliage; tiny, inconspicuous flowers appear in spring.
