Diana of Sharon is a rose of Sharon (Hibiscus syriacus) selection with large white single blooms. It grows into a vase-shaped deciduous shrub that flowers from mid-summer into fall, and works well in shrub borders, hedges and screens. Seed-grown plants may show some variation in bloom.

Why choose our seeds?

  • Large white single blooms on a deciduous shrub
  • Flowers mid-summer through fall, when few shrubs are in bloom
  • Good for hedges, screens and shrub borders

How to grow Diana of Sharon Hibiscus seeds

Choose Your Planting Method

  • Indoors: Start indoors 6-8 weeks before your last frost date.
  • Outdoors: Sow directly after the last frost, or in autumn so seeds experience winter before spring emergence.

Prepare Your Materials

  • Seed-starting trays or pots (if indoors)
  • Well-draining potting mix
  • Spray bottle for misting

Sowing the Seeds

  • Rub each seed lightly with fine sandpaper (scarify), then soak in warm water for 24 hours.
  • Sow about 1/4 inch deep and press the soil gently over the seeds.

Provide the Right Conditions

  • Light: Bright light; grow on in full sun.
  • Temperature: 70-75°F (21-24°C) for germination.

Germination

  • Usually 2-4 weeks with warmth and steady moisture.
  • Thin to the strongest seedlings; keep evenly moist while young.

Transplanting

  • Plant out after the last frost; harden seedlings off first.
  • Spacing: 3-4 feet apart

Care Tips

  • Sun: Full sun for the heaviest bloom; tolerates light shade.
  • Water: Water regularly until established; mature shrubs handle short dry spells.
  • Fertilizer: A balanced fertilizer in early spring supports healthy growth and flowering.
  • Prune in late winter or early spring — rose of Sharon blooms on new wood, so shaping before growth starts encourages more flowers.
