Crown Vetch (Securigera varia, formerly Coronilla varia) is a vigorous perennial legume with low, spreading foliage and clusters of small pink-to-white flowers. It is planted for erosion control on banks and slopes, where its spreading roots knit the soil together. Note: it is aggressive and listed as invasive in parts of North America, so plant it only where it can be contained and check local regulations first.
Why choose our seeds?
- Vigorous ground cover for slopes and banks needing erosion control
- Pink-and-white flower clusters over low, spreading foliage in summer
- As a legume, it adds nitrogen to the soil as it grows
How to grow Crown Vetch seeds
Choose Your Planting Method
- Indoors: Sow 6-8 weeks before your last frost if you want transplantable plugs.
- Outdoors: Direct sow in spring once the soil can be worked.
Prepare Your Materials
- Seed-starting trays or pots
- Well-draining seed-starting mix or loose soil
- Sandpaper or a nail file for scarifying
- Spray bottle for misting
Sowing the Seeds
- Scarify the hard seed coats by nicking or lightly sanding them, which greatly improves germination.
- Sow about 1/2 inch deep and cover with soil.
Provide the Right Conditions
- Light: Full sun.
- Temperature: Around 65-75°F (18-24°C).
Germination
- Scarified seeds germinate in 2-3 weeks.
- Keep the soil moist until seedlings are established.
Transplanting
- Plant out after the last frost, spacing plants 18-24 inches apart.
- Expect the planting to take a season to knit together fully.
Care Tips
- Sun: Full sun for the densest cover.
- Water: Water until established; mature plants tolerate dry spells.
- Fertilizer: Little is needed; legumes fix their own nitrogen.
- Contain aggressively: crown vetch spreads by underground rhizomes and self-seeds, so keep it away from natural areas and mow or cut back to limit spread.
Bloom Time:
Summer.
