Crackerjack is a tall African marigold (Tagetes erecta) with large, fully double blooms in shades of yellow, orange and gold. Plants reach about 30 inches on strong stems, making them good for the back of borders, mass plantings and cut flowers.

Why choose our seeds?

  • Large, fully double blooms in yellow, orange and gold
  • Tall plants (about 28-36 inches) on strong stems
  • Good for borders, mass plantings and cutting

How to grow Crackerjack Marigold seeds

Choose Your Planting Method

  • Indoors: Start indoors 4-6 weeks before your last frost date (February-April in mild climates).
  • Outdoors: Sow directly after the last frost, once the soil has warmed.

Prepare Your Materials

  • Seed-starting trays or pots (if indoors)
  • Well-draining potting mix
  • Spray bottle for misting

Sowing the Seeds

  • Sow seeds about 1/4 inch deep and cover lightly with soil.
  • Keep the soil evenly moist until seedlings emerge.

Provide the Right Conditions

  • Light: Bright light; grow on in full sun.
  • Temperature: 70-85°F (21-29°C); about 72-75°F (22-24°C) is ideal.

Germination

  • 5-10 days (up to about 2 weeks).
  • Thin to the strongest seedlings; grow on in cooler, bright conditions once sprouted.

Transplanting

  • Plant out after the last frost; harden seedlings off first.
  • Spacing: 12-18 inches apart

Care Tips

  • Sun: Full sun.
  • Water: Water regularly to keep soil evenly moist; avoid letting plants dry out completely.
  • Fertilizer: Light feeding with a balanced fertilizer every couple of weeks supports big blooms.
  • Deadhead spent blooms to prolong flowering; stake or support plants in windy spots.

Bloom Time:

Summer through fall, roughly 10-12 weeks after sowing.
