Common Reed Grass (Phragmites australis) is a tall, vigorous grass of wet places, forming dense stands of upright stems topped with feathery, plume-like seed heads. It suits large ponds, constructed wetlands, and very wet garden areas. Please note: an aggressive introduced strain of this reed is invasive in many regions and may be regulated — check local rules before planting, and do not release it near natural waterways.
Why choose our seeds?
- Tall, architectural grass with feathery plume-like seed heads
- Thrives in wet soil and shallow water where few plants grow
- Strong screening and wildlife-cover plant for large wet areas
How to grow Common Reed Grass seeds
Choose Your Planting Method
- Indoors: Start indoors in pots kept wet, for transplanting after frost.
- Outdoors: Sow in a prepared wet bed or container after the last frost.
Prepare Your Materials
- Pots or trays that can sit in a shallow saucer of water
- Moisture-retentive potting mix
- Spray bottle for misting
Sowing the Seeds
- Surface-sow — the seed needs full light to germinate, so do not cover it.
- Stand the pot in about 1 inch of water so the soil stays moist but not deeply flooded.
Provide the Right Conditions
- Light: Full sun and full light on the sowing surface.
- Temperature: Warmth favors germination, ideally 77–95°F (25–35°C).
- Humidity: Keep the soil constantly moist.
Germination
- Germination can be quick in warm, bright, wet conditions, but it is variable — some seed may be slow or may not sprout.
- Keep pots warm and wet and allow several weeks.
Transplanting
- Plant out after frost into reliably wet soil or shallow water margins.
- Space plants 24–36 inches apart; stands spread strongly by rhizomes.
Care Tips
- Sun: Full sun.
- Water: Keep the site wet; do not let it dry out.
- Fertilizer: Not needed in most situations.
- Contain it: grow in a large buried container or lined bed if you want to limit spreading, and check local regulations before planting.
Bloom Time:
Feathery, plume-like seed heads form on mature plants late in the season.
