How to grow Colorful Cloud Lotus seeds
Choose Your Planting Method
- Indoors: Start seeds indoors in a glass of water — lotus germinates in water, not soil.
- Outdoors: Move the sprouted plant outdoors once nighttime temperatures stay above 60°F (16°C).
Prepare Your Materials
- A clear glass or jar for sprouting
- A wide, shallow pot without drainage holes
- Heavy clay soil or aquatic planting media
- Spray bottle for misting
Sowing the Seeds
- Scarify each seed: gently file or nick the hard coat until a pale spot shows, without damaging the inner core.
- Soak scarified seeds in warm water (75-85°F / 24-29°C), changing the water daily.
Provide the Right Conditions
- Light: Bright light; full sun once planted out.
- Temperature: 75-85°F (24-29°C) water for sprouting.
- Humidity: Keep the sprouting water clean and warm.
Germination
- Sprouts emerge in 4-7 days; roots and leaves follow quickly.
- Let the sprout reach 4-6 inches before planting.
Transplanting
- Plant the sprouted seed in heavy clay soil in a wide pot, then submerge the pot under 2-4 inches of water.
- No hardening off is needed if nights are warm — move the container outdoors.
- Give each plant a container at least 12 inches wide for room to spread.
Care Tips
- Sun: Full sun — at least 6 hours of direct sun daily for blooms.
- Water: Keep the pot submerged; never let the soil dry out.
- Fertilizer: Feed with aquatic plant fertilizer tablets once the leaves are established.
- Still, calm water is best — keep away from fountains. In cold climates, overwinter the tuber indoors.
Bloom Time:
Summer; plants started from seed usually bloom in their second growing season.
