Color Fountain Cleome (Cleome hassleriana), the spider flower, is a tall annual producing large, airy flower heads on 3-5 foot stems in a mix of rose pink, cherry pink, white, and violet. It brings height and movement to the back of sunny borders, cottage gardens, and cutting beds, and the blooms last well in a vase.
Why choose our seeds?
- Mixed colors - rose pink, cherry pink, white, and violet - in one packet
- Tall, architectural blooms flowering from summer into fall
- Long-lasting cut flowers; deer tend to leave the plants alone
How to grow Color Fountain Cleome seeds
Choose Your Planting Method
- Indoors: Start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last spring frost.
- Outdoors: Direct sow 1-2 weeks before the last frost, or after all danger of frost has passed.
Prepare Your Materials
- Seed trays or cell packs with drainage
- Seed-starting mix
- Plant labels and a fine mist sprayer
Sowing the Seeds
- Surface sow and press seeds lightly into the mix - they need light to germinate, so do not cover them.
- For better results, chill sown trays in the refrigerator for 2 weeks, then move them to warmth.
Provide the Right Conditions
- Light: Bright light.
- Temperature: 60-70°F (16-21°C).
Germination
- Seeds sprout in 10-30 days.
- Keep the mix lightly moist; do not overwater.
Transplanting
- Move seedlings to their own pots once sturdy enough to handle.
- Plant out after all danger of frost; space 18-24 inches apart.
- Harden off for 7-10 days before planting out; pinch once at 6 inches tall for bushier plants.
Care Tips
- Sun: Full sun.
- Water: Water regularly until established, then only during dry spells.
- Fertilizer: Mix compost into the planting bed; cleome is not a heavy feeder.
- Extra: Deadhead to limit self-sowing if you do not want volunteer seedlings.
Bloom Time:
Summer to fall, beginning roughly 12 weeks after sowing.
