Coleus Mixed Colors grows a parade of vivid foliage in shades of red, burgundy, chartreuse, cream and green on bushy, shade-loving plants. The flowers are secondary here: the leaves are the show, making coleus a favorite for containers and shady borders.
Why choose our seeds?
- A mixed range of bright, patterned foliage colors from one packet
- Grown for its leaves, which color up in part shade where many flowers fade
- Excellent for containers, window boxes and shade borders
How to grow Coleus Mixed Colors seeds
Choose Your Planting Method
- Indoors: Start indoors 8-12 weeks before the last spring frost.
- Outdoors: Direct sowing outdoors is not recommended; coleus needs a long warm season from an indoor start.
Prepare Your Materials
- Seed-starting trays or pots (if indoors)
- Well-draining potting mix
- Humidity dome or plastic wrap to hold moisture
- Spray bottle for misting
Sowing the Seeds
- Surface-sow: sprinkle the tiny seeds over moist mix, press gently, and do not cover with soil, as light is needed for germination. A light dusting of vermiculite helps hold moisture.
- A humidity dome or plastic cover keeps the surface moist until sprouting.
Provide the Right Conditions
- Light: light is required for germination
- Temperature: soil temperature of 70-75°F (21-24°C)
Germination
- Seeds sprout in about 10-14 days under warm, bright, humid conditions.
- Water from the bottom once sprouted to keep tiny seedlings undisturbed.
Transplanting
- Wait until all danger of frost has passed and night temperatures are consistently above 60°F (16°C).
- Harden off before planting out; space plants 8-12 inches apart.
Care Tips
- Sun: part shade is ideal; too much hot sun can fade or bleach the leaf colors.
- Water: keep the soil evenly moist; coleus wilts quickly in dry soil.
- Pinch off the small flower spikes as they appear to keep the plants focused on foliage.
- Coleus is not a heavy feeder; excess fertilizer can dull the bright leaf coloration.
Bloom Time:
Grown for foliage rather than flowers; any flower spikes are usually removed.
