Coffret is a modern cut-flower rose variety noted for cup-shaped blooms in an unusual purple-and-green color combination, with densely packed petals and green-tinted outer petals. Grown from seed, it is a project for patient rose lovers: rose seeds need a long winter-like chilling period to sprout, and seedlings will be unique plants rather than exact copies of the named parent.
Why choose our seeds?
- Seeds of the distinctive Coffret cut-flower rose, with its unusual purple-green coloring
- A rewarding long-term growing project for rose enthusiasts
- Each seedling is one of a kind — no two seed-grown roses are exactly alike
How to grow Coffret seeds
Choose Your Planting Method
- Indoors: Start the chilling treatment in late fall or winter so seedlings are ready for spring.
- Outdoors: In cold climates, seed can be sown outdoors in fall to chill naturally over winter.
Prepare Your Materials
- Seed-starting trays or small pots
- Well-draining seed-starting mix
- Damp paper towel or vermiculite and a sealed bag for chilling
- Spray bottle for misting
Sowing the Seeds
- Soak seeds in water for 4–6 hours, then place in a damp (not wet) paper towel or vermiculite inside a sealed bag.
- Chill in the refrigerator at 36–40°F (2–4°C) for 8–12 weeks to break dormancy; check occasionally for mold and for early sprouts.
Provide the Right Conditions
- Light: Bright, indirect light for young seedlings.
- Temperature: 70–75°F (21–24°C) after the chilling period.
- Humidity: Keep the medium evenly moist but never soggy.
Germination
- After chilling, sow 1/4 inch deep in seed-starting mix.
- Germination is slow and uneven, often taking several weeks to a few months — keep the tray warm and moist and be patient.
Transplanting
- Pot up seedlings individually once they have several true leaves.
- Move outdoors after frost into full sun, spacing plants 18–24 inches apart.
Care Tips
- Sun: Full sun.
- Water: Water deeply and regularly; roses dislike drying out.
- Fertilizer: Feed established plants during the growing season.
- Seed-grown roses vary — thin to the strongest seedlings if growing several.
Bloom Time:
Seed-grown roses are slow to establish; flowering on mature plants occurs during the warm season, and seedlings will not be identical to the named Coffret parent.
