How to grow Chinese Lantern seeds
Choose Your Planting Method
- Indoors: Start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost.
- Outdoors: Direct sow after the last frost, once the soil has warmed.
Prepare Your Materials
- Seed-starting trays or pots (if indoors)
- Well-draining potting mix
- Clear plastic wrap or a humidity dome
- Spray bottle for misting
Sowing the Seeds
- Sow on the surface of moist seed-starting mix and press gently — the seeds need light to germinate
- Cover no more than 1/16 inch deep, if at all
Provide the Right Conditions
- Light: Bright light; seeds need light to germinate
- Temperature: 65-70°F (18-21°C)
- Humidity: Cover lightly until sprouts appear, then remove the cover
Germination
- Expect germination in 14-28 days — be patient
- Keep the medium evenly moist but not waterlogged
Transplanting
- Transplant after all frost danger has passed
- Space plants 18-24 inches apart
Care Tips
- Sun: Full sun to partial shade
- Water: Water regularly until established; avoid waterlogging
- Fertilizer: Generally needs little feeding
- Note: plants spread by underground rhizomes — grow in containers or give them room to roam
Bloom Time:
Small white flowers in summer; lantern pods ripen in late summer to fall.
