Cherry Sunflower (Helianthus annuus) is a branching sunflower with rich, cherry-toned blooms that bring unusual warmth to the late-summer garden. Branching types carry many flowers per plant rather than one giant head, giving a longer season of color for cutting and for the bees. Direct sow after the soil warms; sunflowers race upward fast in full sun.

Why choose our seeds?

  • Rich cherry-colored blooms on freely branching plants
  • Many flowers per plant over a long season; superb for cutting
  • Easy from direct sowing; bees and butterflies visit constantly

How to grow Cherry Sunflower seeds

Choose Your Planting Method

  • Indoors: Not recommended; sunflowers dislike transplanting.
  • Outdoors: Direct sow after your last frost, once the soil has warmed to at least 60°F (16°C).

Prepare Your Materials

  • A sunny, well-drained spot
  • Rich, loose garden soil
  • Support stakes if your site is windy

Sowing the Seeds

  • Sow seeds 1-2 inches deep in the prepared soil.
  • Space seeds about 6 inches apart, then thin to 12-15 inches for strong, well-branched plants.

Provide the Right Conditions

  • Light: Full sun, as many hours as possible.
  • Temperature: Warm soil is the key; do not sow into cold, wet ground.

Germination

  • Seeds germinate in 7-14 days in warm soil.
  • Protect young seedlings from birds and slugs until they are well grown.

Transplanting

  • Not applicable; thin direct-sown seedlings to their final spacing instead.
  • Sow in succession every two weeks for blooms through late summer.

Care Tips

  • Sun: Full sun for strong stems and rich color.
  • Water: Water deeply once a week; established plants are fairly drought tolerant.
  • Fertilizer: Average soil is fine; too much nitrogen gives leaves at the expense of flowers.
  • Cut often for bouquets; the more you cut, the more side branches bloom.

Bloom Time:

Summer to early fall; typically 60-80 days from sowing to bloom.
