Chater's Double Hollyhock (Alcea rosea) bears tall 5-7 foot spires packed with large, fully double, peony-like blooms in a mix of colors. A biennial cottage-garden classic, it is made for fences, walls and the back of borders.

Why choose our seeds?

  • Fully double, ruffled blooms in mixed colors
  • Towering 5-7 foot flower spires for vertical drama
  • Blooms early to midsummer of the second year; self-sows readily

How to grow Chater's Double Hollyhock seeds

Choose Your Planting Method

  • Indoors: Start 6-8 weeks before the last frost.
  • Outdoors: Sow after the last frost, or in fall for blooms the following year.

Prepare Your Materials

  • Seed-starting trays or pots (if indoors)
  • Well-draining potting mix or rich garden soil
  • Spray bottle for misting

Sowing the Seeds

  • Sow on the soil surface and press in gently - light aids germination; or cover no more than 1/4 inch.
  • Keep evenly moist until sprouting.

Provide the Right Conditions

  • Light: Light is beneficial during germination.
  • Temperature: 60-70°F (15-21°C).

Germination

  • Seedlings typically emerge in 10-14 days.
  • Grow on in bright light with good air circulation.

Transplanting

  • Harden off and transplant after frost; hollyhocks resent root disturbance, so move them young.
  • Space plants 18-24 inches apart.

Care Tips

  • Sun: Full sun.
  • Water: Average needs; keep moist until established, then water when the soil dries.
  • Fertilizer: Plant in rich soil with compost; a light spring feeding is enough.
  • Stake tall spires in windy spots; good spacing improves airflow.

Bloom Time:

Early to midsummer of the second year.
