How to grow Celway Mix Celosia seeds
Choose Your Planting Method
- Indoors: Start 6-8 weeks before the last frost.
- Outdoors: Sow after the last frost, once the soil has warmed.
Prepare Your Materials
- Seed-starting trays or pots (if indoors)
- Well-draining potting mix
- Humidity dome or plastic wrap to hold moisture
- Spray bottle for misting
Sowing the Seeds
- Sow on the surface or cover only very lightly — light aids germination.
- Keep the mix evenly moist; let it dry slightly between waterings to avoid damping off.
Provide the Right Conditions
- Light: Bright light.
- Temperature: 72-80°F (22-27°C).
- Humidity: A plastic cover over the tray helps hold moisture until germination.
Germination
- 8-14 days.
- Grow on in bright, warm conditions; seedlings are prone to damping off, so avoid overwatering.
Transplanting
- After all danger of frost has passed.
- Harden off before planting out.
- 8-12 inches apart.
Care Tips
- Sun: Full sun — at least 6-8 hours of direct sun for the biggest, brightest heads.
- Water: Keep evenly moist until established; then water moderately — established plants handle short dry spells.
- Fertilizer: Feed lightly; avoid excess nitrogen, which favors foliage over flowers.
- Pinch cockscomb types when 8-12 inches tall to encourage branching and more uniform heads; hang cut stems upside down for two weeks to dry.
Bloom Time:
Summer until frost; first flowers appear roughly 60-90 days after sowing.
