Canary creeper (Tropaeolum peregrinum) is a fast-growing climbing vine with delicate, fringe-petaled yellow flowers shaped like tiny canary wings. It scrambles 8-10 feet over trellises, fences and railings, flowering from summer into fall.
Why choose our seeds?
- Bright yellow, fringed “canary wing” blooms
- Vigorous climbing vine for trellises, fences and containers
- Flowers from summer through fall
How to grow Canary Creeper Nasturtium seeds
Choose Your Planting Method
- Indoors: Start indoors 4-6 weeks before the last frost in peat pots (roots dislike disturbance).
- Outdoors: Direct sow after the last frost, once the soil has warmed.
Prepare Your Materials
- Seed-starting trays or pots (if indoors)
- Well-draining potting mix
- Spray bottle for misting
Sowing the Seeds
- Soak seeds overnight in warm water, then nick the hard coat lightly with sandpaper if needed.
- Sow 1/4-1/2 inch deep and cover with soil — these seeds need darkness to germinate.
Provide the Right Conditions
- Light: Full sun to partial shade.
- Temperature: 65-70°F (18-21°C) for germination.
Germination
- 7-14 days in warm, moist soil.
- Grow seedlings on in bright light and provide support early — young vines start climbing quickly.
Transplanting
- Move outdoors after all frost danger has passed; transplant peat pots whole to avoid root shock.
- Spacing: 8-12 inches apart at the base of a trellis or support
Care Tips
- Sun: Full sun to partial shade.
- Water: Water regularly to keep soil evenly moist, especially in dry spells.
- Fertilizer: Average soil is best — very rich soil produces lots of leaves at the expense of flowers.
- Provide a trellis, fence or strings for the vines to climb; pinch growing tips to encourage branching.
Bloom Time:
Summer through fall.
