Cambridge Blue (Lobelia erinus) is a compact edging lobelia forming neat mounds about 4 inches tall and 6 inches wide, covered in clear sky-blue, two-lipped flowers. It is an RHS Award of Garden Merit variety, recognized for reliable garden performance.

This easy annual shines in beds, edging, containers, window boxes, and rockeries, flowering for months with little fuss.

Why choose our seeds?

  • Clear sky-blue blooms on compact, mounding 4-inch plants — an RHS AGM variety
  • Long flowering period, from early summer onward
  • Versatile for edging, containers, window boxes, and rockeries

How to grow Cambridge Blue Lobelia seeds

Choose Your Planting Method

  • Indoors: Sow indoors from late winter to mid-spring; the seed is dust-like, so indoor sowing is surest.
  • Outdoors: Sow outdoors after all frost danger in mild climates.

Prepare Your Materials

  • Seed-starting trays or pots (if indoors)
  • Well-draining potting mix
  • A fine mister — the tiny seeds must not be washed away
  • Spray bottle for misting

Sowing the Seeds

  • Surface sow on moist seed compost and gently firm down; do not cover, as light is required for germination.
  • Seal the tray in a polythene bag or propagator to hold moisture.

Provide the Right Conditions

  • Light: Do not exclude light; bright, indirect light for germination.
  • Temperature: 65–75°F (18–24°C).
  • Humidity: Keep the compost damp but not wet until germination.

Germination

  • Germination usually takes 14 to 21 days.
  • Grow seedlings on in cooler conditions once large enough to handle.

Transplanting

  • Acclimatize over 7 to 10 days, then plant out after all risk of frost.
  • Spacing: 4 inches (10 cm) apart, in small bunches.

Care Tips

  • Sun: Full sun or partial shade; a moist soil prolongs flowering.
  • Water: Regular; lobelia dislikes drying out. Feed and water frequently through summer for continuous bloom.
  • Fertilizer: Liquid feed every couple of weeks in containers.
  • Shear back lightly if plants tire in midsummer heat; they usually flush again in cooler weather.

Bloom Time:

Flowers June to September, often until the first frosts.
