This calathea mix grows tropical foliage plants prized for their patterned leaves — bold stripes, spots and markings in greens, creams and purples, depending on the variety. Calatheas are indoor plants for warm, humid rooms, and their leaves gently fold upward in the evening.
Why choose our seeds?
- Patterned tropical foliage in a mix of varieties
- Indoor plant for warm, humid rooms
- Leaves fold gently in the evening (prayer-plant movement)
How to grow Calathea Mix seeds
Choose Your Planting Method
- Indoors: Sow indoors in spring or summer — calatheas are grown as indoor plants year-round.
- Outdoors: Not suited to outdoor sowing in most climates; grow as an indoor container plant.
Prepare Your Materials
- Seed-starting trays or pots (if indoors)
- Well-draining potting mix
- Peat-based potting mix (sterile is best)
- Humidity dome, clear plastic bag or box
- Spray bottle for misting
Sowing the Seeds
- Soak seeds in warm water for 12-24 hours before sowing.
- Sow on the surface and cover very lightly (about 2 mm) with fine mix.
Provide the Right Conditions
- Light: Bright, indirect light — avoid direct sun, which scorches the leaves.
- Temperature: Around 77°F (25°C) by day and about 68°F (22°C) at night.
- Humidity: High humidity is important — keep pots in a closed, humid enclosure until seedlings are established.
Germination
- Usually 3-8 weeks, depending on warmth and humidity.
- Keep seedlings warm, humid and evenly moist; prick out into separate pots once they have a few leaves.
Transplanting
- Pot up individually when seedlings are large enough to handle.
- Spacing: One plant per pot; space pots so leaves do not touch
Care Tips
- Sun: Bright, indirect light indoors; no direct midday sun.
- Water: Keep the mix evenly moist but not waterlogged; never let it dry out completely.
- Fertilizer: Feed lightly with a balanced houseplant fertilizer during the growing season.
- Maintain humidity with a pebble tray or humidifier; avoid cold drafts and sudden temperature changes.
Bloom Time:
Grown for foliage — mature plants may occasionally produce small blooms, but flowers are not the main feature.
