Buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum) is a fast-growing warm-season annual grown as a grain crop, a quick green manure, and for its clusters of small white flowers. Its edible seeds can be cooked like a grain or milled into flour, and its rapid, dense growth smothers weeds in the garden. This packet contains 30 seeds.

Seed Information

  • Type: Vegetable Seeds
  • Common Name: Buckwheat
  • Botanical Name: Fagopyrum esculentum
  • Life Cycle: Annual
  • Sunlight: Full sun
  • Watering: Moderate; prefers evenly moist, well-draining soil
  • Growth Habit: 2-4 feet tall
  • Soil Type: Tolerates low-fertility and acidic soils; needs good drainage
  • Planting Time: After the last frost, when soil is warm
  • Days to Maturity: 30-45 days to flowering; 70-100 days for seed

Growing Instructions

  • When to Plant: Sow after all danger of frost has passed and soil temperatures are warm. Multiple sowings can be made through the summer.
  • Soil: Buckwheat is not fussy - it grows in light to medium, well-draining soil, even low-fertility or acidic ground.
  • Sunlight: Full sun (at least 6 hours a day).
  • Watering: Water to keep soil evenly moist until established; it needs little care after that.
  • Spacing: Broadcast over the bed or sow 6-12 inches apart in rows.
  • Germination: Sow 1/2 inch deep. Germination takes 3-7 days in warm soil at 55-85°F (13-29°C).
  • Harvest: For green manure, cut plants down about 10 days after they begin flowering (4-7 weeks after planting). For seed, let plants mature fully and harvest before seeds shatter.
  • Tips: Till or cut plants before seeds mature if you do not want them to self-seed and become weedy. Residue breaks down quickly and can be tilled in.
