Sacred lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) is the classic water-garden flower, with large round leaves and elegant blooms held high above the water. This selection produces deep red blooms. Note: flower color and form can vary in seed-grown plants, and blooming usually begins in the second season.
Why choose our seeds?
- Deep red blooms rising above round, water-shedding leaves
- A true aquatic plant for ponds and large water containers
- Dramatic architectural foliage even when not in flower
How to grow Brilliant Red Midnight Lotus seeds
Choose Your Planting Method
- Indoors: Start seeds indoors in a container of warm water at any time you can hold the temperature steady.
- Outdoors: Move the planted container outdoors after the last frost, once the water stays warm.
Prepare Your Materials
- Seed-starting trays or pots (if indoors)
- Well-draining potting mix
- Spray bottle for misting
Sowing the Seeds
- Scarify each seed: gently file or nick the rounded end of the hard coat until the pale inner layer shows — avoid the pointed end, which holds the embryo.
- Soak scarified seeds in warm, clean water, changing the water daily to keep it fresh.
Provide the Right Conditions
- Light: Bright light once sprouted; mature plants need at least 6 hours of direct sun.
- Temperature: 75-85°F (24-29°C) water temperature for sprouting.
Germination
- Sprouts usually emerge within 4-7 days in warm water.
- Let sprouts grow to 4-6 inches before planting; keep changing the water daily until then.
Transplanting
- Press the sprouted seedling, roots down, into heavy clay loam or aquatic planting media, leaving new growth above the surface.
- One plant per wide container — lotus spreads vigorously by runners.
Care Tips
- Sun: Full sun — at least 6 hours of direct sun daily.
- Water: Set the pot under 2-4 inches of calm water, deepening as the plant grows; avoid fountains and fast-moving water.
- Fertilizer: Feed sparingly once established; lotus is not a heavy feeder in a balanced pond.
- In cold climates, overwinter the dormant tuber in a frost-free spot.
Bloom Time:
Summer; seed-grown plants usually bloom from their second season.
