How to grow Brilliant Red Happy Lover Lotus seeds
Choose Your Planting Method
- Indoors: Start seeds in a container of warm water indoors.
- Outdoors: Move sprouted seedlings to outdoor ponds or large containers in warm weather.
Prepare Your Materials
- A small file or sandpaper (for scarification)
- A bowl or jar of warm water
- A wide pot (18 inches or wider) without drainage holes
- Heavy garden soil or aquatic planting mix
Sowing the Seeds
- Scarify each seed by gently filing or sanding a small spot of the hard coat until the pale inner layer shows — do not damage the embryo inside.
- Soak in warm water at 75–85°F (24–29°C), changing the water daily.
Provide the Right Conditions
- Light: Full sun — at least 6 hours of direct sun daily.
- Temperature: Keep the water at 75–85°F (24–29°C) during sprouting.
Germination
- Sprouts often emerge within 1–7 days of soaking.
- Once a sprout has small leaves and roots, press it gently into heavy, wet soil.
Transplanting
- Plant sprouted seeds in large pots of heavy aquatic soil.
- Keep the soil under 2–4 inches of water; do not bury the growing tip.
Care Tips
- Sun: Full sun, at least 6 hours daily.
- Water: Keep the pot submerged; top up as water evaporates.
- Fertilizer: Feed lightly with an aquatic fertilizer once plants are established.
Bloom Time:
Summer; each flower lasts a few days.
