Bright Red Purslane (Portulaca oleracea) is a heat-loving annual with succulent, trailing foliage and vivid red blooms that open in bright sunshine. It forms a low, spreading carpet that thrives where many flowers wilt.
Purslane is one of the toughest summer groundcovers: it tolerates poor soil, reflected heat, and dry spells, making it ideal for edging, rock gardens, hot slopes, and containers.
Why choose our seeds?
- Vivid red flowers on low, spreading succulent foliage
- Exceptional heat tolerance for hot, dry, sunny spots
- Low-maintenance groundcover for edging, rockeries, and containers
How to grow Bright Red Purslane seeds
Choose Your Planting Method
- Indoors: Start indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost.
- Outdoors: Direct sow after all danger of frost, once nights are reliably warm.
Prepare Your Materials
- Seed-starting trays or pots (if indoors)
- Well-draining potting mix
- Spray bottle for misting
Sowing the Seeds
- Surface sow — press seeds onto moist mix and do not cover, as light aids germination.
- Mist gently so the tiny seeds are not washed away.
Provide the Right Conditions
- Light: Bright light from sowing onward; full sun for growing plants.
- Temperature: 70–85°F (21–29°C).
- Humidity: Keep the surface lightly moist until germination, then let the top dry slightly between waterings.
Germination
- Germination in about 7 to 14 days.
- Seedlings are tiny at first; grow them on in warmth and bright light.
Transplanting
- Set out after all frost danger, once nights stay above 50°F (10°C).
- Spacing: 6 to 8 inches apart; plants will knit together into a mat.
Care Tips
- Sun: Full sun for the most flowers; blooms open widest in bright light.
- Water: Low to moderate; succulent leaves store water. Water deeply but infrequently once established.
- Fertilizer: Seldom needed; too-rich soil grows foliage at the expense of blooms.
Bloom Time:
Blooms from early summer until frost in warm weather.
