Brazilian Pennywort (Hydrocotyle leucocephala) is a fast-growing aquatic and semi-aquatic plant with round, bright green, coin-shaped leaves. It is a favorite for aquariums, paludariums, and water gardens, where it can be grown fully submerged, floating, or with its leaves trailing above the waterline. From seed it is best started emersed (out of water) in a warm, humid container, then moved into the tank or pond once sturdy.
Why choose our seeds?
- Bright, round, coin-shaped leaves on trailing or floating stems
- Versatile: grows submerged, floating, or emersed in wet soil
- Fast-growing once established; easy to trim and propagate from cuttings
How to grow Brazilian Pennywort seeds
Choose Your Planting Method
- Indoors: The recommended method; start emersed in a covered container, then move to the aquarium or pond.
- Outdoors: Start indoors and plant out only after all danger of frost, as a pond or bog plant in warm climates.
Prepare Your Materials
- Small pots or trays
- Aquatic or seed-starting mix kept very wet
- Clear plastic dome or wrap to hold humidity
- Bright aquarium light or sunny windowsill
Sowing the Seeds
- Sow on the surface of the wet mix and press in lightly; the tiny seeds need light, so do not bury them.
- Cover the container to keep humidity near 100%.
Provide the Right Conditions
- Light: Bright light; seedlings stall in dim conditions.
- Temperature: 72-80°F (22-27°C).
Germination
- Seeds germinate in 2-4 weeks in warm, humid conditions.
- Grow seedlings on emersed until they have several sturdy leaves.
Transplanting
- Move sturdy young plants to the aquarium, pond margin, or a wet bog pot.
- Anchor submerged stems lightly in the substrate or let them float.
Care Tips
- Light: Moderate to bright light in the aquarium or full sun to part shade outdoors.
- Water: Keep the growing medium wet at all times; plants thrive with roots in water.
- Fertilizer: Aquatic plant fertilizer or nutrient-rich substrate supports lush growth.
- Trim regularly to shape the plant; cuttings root readily. Note: this plant grows vigorously, so never release it into local waterways.
Growing Season:
Year-round indoors; outdoors only in frost-free weather.
