Boston Pickling Cucumber (Cucumis sativus) is a warm-season annual vine grown for its crisp, dark-green cucumbers — best picked at 3–6 inches for pickles, and also excellent fresh in salads. A heavy-yielding, time-tested variety that keeps producing until frost when picked regularly.

Growing Instructions

  • When to Plant: Direct sow after the last frost when soil is at least 70°F (21°C); or start indoors 3–4 weeks earlier in biodegradable pots — cucumbers dislike root disturbance
  • Soil: Fertile, well-drained soil rich in organic matter
  • Sunlight: Full sun
  • Watering: Water regularly and deeply at the root zone; mulch to conserve moisture
  • Spacing: Space 12–18 inches apart in rows 36 inches apart; a trellis gives straighter fruits
  • Germination: 7–10 days at 70–90°F (21–32°C); sow ½ inch deep
  • Harvest: Pick at 3–6 inches for the crispest pickles; harvest every 2–3 days — regular picking keeps vines producing
  • Tips: Fruits left to grow large slow down production; watch for cucumber beetles early in the season
