Blue Woodruff (Asperula orientalis) is a low annual covered in clouds of tiny, sweetly scented lavender-blue flowers above whorls of lance-shaped leaves. It suits edging, borders and containers, and the blooms cut nicely for small bouquets.
Why choose our seeds?
- Fragrant lavender-blue flower clusters over a long season
- Low, mounding habit (6-12 inches) for edging and containers
- Blooms late spring to early summer; often self-sows for a return show
How to grow Blue Woodruff seeds
Choose Your Planting Method
- Indoors: Start 10-12 weeks before the last frost.
- Outdoors: Sow several weeks before the last frost, or in fall.
Prepare Your Materials
- Seed-starting trays or pots (if indoors)
- Rich, moist, well-draining potting mix or garden soil
- Spray bottle for misting
Sowing the Seeds
- Cover seeds 1/4 inch deep and firm the soil lightly.
- Keep the seedbed evenly moist until germination.
Provide the Right Conditions
- Light: Full sun to partial shade.
- Temperature: Cool conditions suit it best - around 39°F (4°C) for two weeks, then near 50°F (10°C).
Germination
- Seedlings typically emerge in 2-3 weeks.
- Grow seedlings on in cool, bright conditions.
Transplanting
- Transplant after the last frost once seedlings have true leaves; harden off first.
- Space plants 9-12 inches apart.
Care Tips
- Sun: Full sun to partial shade; it fades in extreme summer heat.
- Water: Keep soil evenly moist, especially in hot, dry weather.
- Fertilizer: Not heavy feeders - rich soil with compost is enough.
- Deadhead to extend flowering; leave some heads to self-sow.
Bloom Time:
Late spring to early summer.
