How to grow Blue Sea Holly seeds
Choose Your Planting Method
- Indoors: Start in late winter after a cold stratification period.
- Outdoors: Sow in fall so winter provides natural chilling, for spring germination.
Prepare Your Materials
- Seed-starting trays or deep pots (if indoors)
- Sharply draining, sandy potting mix
- Spray bottle for misting
Sowing the Seeds
- Sow ⅛–¼ inch deep in moist, sharply drained mix.
- Give about 30 days of cold-moist stratification (in a refrigerator) before spring sowing, or sow outdoors in fall.
Provide the Right Conditions
- Light: Full sun.
- Temperature: Room temperature after the chilling period.
- Humidity: Keep the mix lightly moist; avoid soggy conditions.
Germination
- Germination is irregular — it may take a few weeks or as long as 90 days, so be patient.
- Grow on in full sun in sharply drained soil.
Transplanting
- Transplant carefully when seedlings are sturdy; sea hollies dislike root disturbance.
- Harden off before planting out.
- Space about 12 inches apart in sharply drained soil.
Care Tips
- Sun: Full sun.
- Water: Water during establishment; avoid waterlogged soil.
- Fertilizer: Generally not heavy feeders; lean soils are fine.
Bloom Time:
Summer, typically June to September.
