Blue Chiffon is a rose of Sharon (Hibiscus syriacus) grown for its lacy, semi-double blooms in soft lavender-blue, each with a powderpuff of extra petals at the center and a star-like red-purple stain at the base. Flowers reach about 4 inches across.
Rose of Sharon is a deciduous flowering shrub that blooms continuously from midsummer into fall, when little else is flowering. Please note: the true 'Blue Chiffon' cultivar is a patented, sterile selection propagated by cuttings, so seedlings grown from these seeds will be rose of Sharon plants whose flower color and form may differ from the named variety — part of the surprise of growing shrubs from seed.
Why choose our seeds?
- Soft lavender-blue, semi-double blooms with a ruffled center, flowering midsummer to fall
- Deciduous shrub reaching 8–12 ft, useful as a hedge, screen, or specimen
- Tolerates heat, humidity, and a range of soils once established
How to grow Blue Chiffon Hibiscus seeds
Choose Your Planting Method
- Indoors: Start indoors 8 to 10 weeks before the last frost.
- Outdoors: Sow outdoors in spring after the last frost.
Prepare Your Materials
- Seed-starting trays or pots (if indoors)
- Well-draining potting mix
- Spray bottle for misting
Sowing the Seeds
- Soak seeds in warm water for several hours or overnight before sowing.
- Sow shallowly, about 1/16 to 1/4 inch deep, and press into moist mix.
Provide the Right Conditions
- Light: Bright light; full sun for growing plants.
- Temperature: Around 70–75°F (21–24°C).
- Humidity: Keep evenly moist; cover until sprouts appear.
Germination
- Germination usually in 7 to 21 days.
- Seedlings grow slowly at first; be patient.
Transplanting
- Transplant after frost danger; harden off gradually. Shrubs grown from seed take a few seasons to reach flowering size.
- Spacing: About 36 inches apart; mature shrubs reach 4–6 ft wide.
Care Tips
- Sun: Full sun for the heaviest bloom; tolerates part shade.
- Water: Moderate; water regularly in the first seasons and during hot, dry spells.
- Fertilizer: A balanced fertilizer in spring supports growth and flowering.
- Prune in early spring to shape; blooms form on new wood. Be patient in spring — hibiscus leafs out late.
Bloom Time:
Seed-grown shrubs typically begin flowering a few seasons after sowing, then bloom midsummer through fall.
