Black Velvet petunia (Petunia hybrida) is famous for its velvety, near-black trumpet blooms — the darkest flowers in the petunia world, reading as deep purple-black in the garden. Compact, mounded plants reach 8 to 12 inches tall and spread 12 to 20 inches.

The dramatic dark blooms flower from late spring to frost and pair strikingly with silver foliage or bright pinks and yellows in containers and beds.

Why choose our seeds?

  • Velvety near-black trumpet blooms — the darkest petunia color available
  • Compact, mounded habit for containers, edging, and baskets
  • Continuous bloom from late spring until frost

How to grow Black Velvet Petunia seeds

Choose Your Planting Method

  • Indoors: Start indoors 8 to 10 weeks before the last frost; petunia seed is tiny and slow at first.
  • Outdoors: Direct sow after frost danger, though indoor starting gives earlier flowers.

Prepare Your Materials

  • Seed-starting trays or pots (if indoors)
  • Well-draining potting mix
  • Spray bottle for misting

Sowing the Seeds

  • Surface sow on moist mix and do not cover — light is required for germination.
  • Mist gently; keep the surface evenly moist until sprouted.

Provide the Right Conditions

  • Light: Bright light from sowing; do not exclude light.
  • Temperature: Around 75°F (24°C).
  • Humidity: A humidity dome or plastic cover helps hold moisture until germination.

Germination

  • Germination in 7 to 10 days.
  • Grow seedlings on in bright, slightly cooler conditions to keep them stocky.

Transplanting

  • Transplant after all frost danger, once nights are reliably mild.
  • Spacing: 8 to 12 inches apart; closer in containers.

Care Tips

  • Sun: Full sun for the most flowers.
  • Water: Even moisture; containers may need daily watering in summer heat.
  • Fertilizer: Feed every 1 to 2 weeks with a balanced liquid fertilizer for continuous bloom.
  • Deadhead or shear lightly to keep plants blooming strongly; dark blooms show best against light-colored mulch or companions.
