Aquilegia 'Petticoat Pink' is a cottage-garden columbine admired for its semi-double blooms in soft pink and white, frilled and pleated like a Victorian petticoat. The nodding flowers sit above compact, bushy mounds of lacy green foliage, reaching about 24 inches (60 cm) tall.
Columbines flower in late spring to early summer and settle happily into partially shaded borders, woodland edges, and containers. Plants grown from seed typically flower the year after sowing.
Why choose our seeds?

How to grow Aquilegia 'Petticoat Pink' seeds
Choose Your Planting Method
- Indoors: Start seeds indoors February to June for surest results.
- Outdoors: Sow outdoors April to June in a prepared seed bed, or direct-sow in autumn.
Prepare Your Materials
- Seed-starting trays or pots (if indoors)
- Well-draining potting mix
- Spray bottle for misting
Sowing the Seeds
- Sow 1/4 inch (0.5 cm) deep in moist seed-starting mix and water well.
- Chilling the sown seeds in a refrigerator for about 3 weeks before warming can improve germination, though it is not mandatory.
Provide the Right Conditions
- Light: Bright, indirect light once sown; seedlings tolerate partial shade.
- Temperature: Around 68°F (20°C).
- Humidity: Keep the mix consistently moist but not waterlogged; a humidity dome or plastic cover helps until seedlings appear.
Germination
- Seedlings usually appear in 21 to 42 days.
- Grow on in individual pots, always handling seedlings by a leaf rather than the stem.
Transplanting
- Gradually acclimatize young plants to outdoor conditions, then plant out June to October after all risk of frost.
- Spacing: About 12 inches (30 cm) apart.
Care Tips
- Sun: Partial shade is ideal; tolerates full sun where summers are cool.
- Water: Average moisture; do not overwater. Good drainage matters most.
- Fertilizer: Not a heavy feeder; compost worked into the planting soil is generally enough.
- Remove spent flower stalks to encourage further blooming and reduce unwanted self-seeding.
Bloom Time:
Flowers May to July, generally in the year after sowing.
