America Sweet Pea (Lathyrus odoratus) is a classic grandiflora sweet pea with wavy, sparkling red-and-white striped blooms and a strong, sweet fragrance. This early variety carries about three large flowers per stem, perfect for cutting. Like all sweet peas, it is a cool-season climber happiest scrambling up a trellis in the mild days of spring.
Why choose our seeds?
- Bright red-and-white striped blooms with a wonderful fragrance
- Large flowers on good cutting stems; the more you pick, the more they bloom
- Vigorous climbing habit, reaching about 6 feet with support
How to grow America Sweet Pea seeds
Choose Your Planting Method
- Indoors: Sow 4-6 weeks before your last frost in deep pots; sweet pea roots resent disturbance, so use pots you can plant whole.
- Outdoors: Direct sow in early spring as soon as the soil can be worked, or in fall in mild-winter climates.
Prepare Your Materials
- Deep pots or root-trainer trays (if indoors)
- Well-draining seed-starting mix or rich garden soil
- Trellis, netting, or other support, erected before planting
- Spray bottle for misting
Sowing the Seeds
- Nick the hard seed coat lightly and soak seeds overnight in water to speed sprouting.
- Sow 1 inch deep, spacing seeds 6-8 inches apart.
Provide the Right Conditions
- Light: Full sun or light shade in a cool spot; seedlings grown too warm and dim become leggy.
- Temperature: Sweet peas germinate best in cool conditions, 50-65°F (10-18°C).
Germination
- Seeds germinate in 10-20 days in cool soil.
- Pinch out the shoot tips when plants are 3-4 inches tall to encourage bushy, multi-stemmed growth.
Transplanting
- Transplant carefully without disturbing the root ball; plant out around the last frost date.
- Space plants 6-8 inches apart at the base of their support.
Care Tips
- Sun: Full sun to light shade; cool soils give the best performance.
- Water: Keep the soil consistently moist; mulch the root zone to keep it cool.
- Fertilizer: Plant in rich, humusy soil and feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer every two weeks.
- Deadhead constantly and cut flowers often to prolong the display. Note: sweet pea seeds resemble edible peas but are toxic if eaten; keep away from children and pets.
Bloom Time:
Spring to early summer; plants fade as hot weather arrives.
