Alfalfa (Medicago sativa) is a deep-rooted legume widely grown as a living mulch and green-manure cover crop. Sown between plantings, it shades out weeds, loosens the soil with its deep roots and adds nitrogen when turned under before flowering.

Why choose our seeds?

  • Fast-establishing cover crop that outcompetes weeds
  • Deep roots break up compacted soil layers
  • A legume — turned into the soil before flowering, it enriches the bed for the next crop

How to grow Alfalfa Cover Crop seeds

Choose Your Planting Method

  • Indoors: Not started indoors — alfalfa is always direct-sown where it will grow.
  • Outdoors: Sow in spring once the soil can be worked, or in late summer to early fall for an overwintering cover.

Prepare Your Materials

  • Seed-starting trays or pots (if indoors)
  • Well-draining potting mix
  • Spray bottle for misting

Sowing the Seeds

  • Sow 1/4 to 1/2 inch deep in a prepared, weed-free seedbed; do not plant deeper than 1 inch.
  • Rake lightly to cover and firm the seedbed for good seed-to-soil contact.

Provide the Right Conditions

  • Light: Full sun.
  • Temperature: Best germination at soil temperatures of 65-85°F (18-29°C).

Germination

  • Seedlings typically emerge in 7-12 days under good moisture and warmth.
  • Keep the seedbed evenly moist until seedlings are well established.

Transplanting

  • Not transplanted — alfalfa is grown in place and cut or turned under.
  • Sow thickly as a cover crop; no thinning needed.

Care Tips

  • Sun: Full sun.
  • Water: Keep evenly moist during establishment; thereafter water moderately.
  • Fertilizer: No fertilizer needed for cover-crop use.
  • Mow or cut plants before they flower, then turn the foliage into the soil as green manure.

Bloom Time:

Small purple flower spikes in summer if left to bloom — for cover-crop use, cut before flowering.
