How to grow A Shropshire Lad Rose seeds
Choose Your Planting Method
- Indoors: Stratify first, then sow in pots indoors.
- Outdoors: Sow in fall for natural winter chilling.
Prepare Your Materials
- Damp vermiculite or paper towel and a plastic bag (for stratification)
- Seed-starting pots
- Well-draining potting mix
- Spray bottle for misting
Sowing the Seeds
- Cold-stratify seeds in a damp medium in the refrigerator at 35-41°F (2-5°C) for 8-12 weeks.
- Then sow 1/4 inch deep and cover lightly.
Provide the Right Conditions
- Light: Warm spot with indirect light
- Temperature: 70-75°F (21-24°C) after stratification
Germination
- Germination takes several weeks to a few months; keep evenly moist.
- Be patient; rose seeds sprout unevenly.
Transplanting
- Move to individual pots at the true-leaf stage; plant out after all frost danger has passed.
- Space plants about 24 inches apart. Note: named roses do not reliably come true from seed.
Care Tips
- Sun: Full sun
- Water: Regular watering in rich, well-drained soil
- Fertilizer: Feed in spring and again in summer
- Prune in late winter to shape the plant
Bloom Time:
Plants grown from seed typically take 1-2 years to flower.
