Choose the Right Time to Plant
Cool Season Crop:
Spring planting: Sow 2–4 weeks before the last frost.
Fall planting: Sow 30–60 days before the first frost if used as a winter cover crop.
Prepare the Soil
Soil Type: Loam, clay, or sandy soil
Soil pH: 6.0–7.0
Tip: Loosen the top 4–6 inches of soil. Add compost if your soil is poor.
Sow the Seeds
Seeding Depth: ½ to 1 inch (1.2–2.5 cm) deep
Spacing: Broadcast seeds for cover cropping or space 1–2 inches apart in rows
Seed Rate (for cover crop): About 40–60 lbs per acre, or 1–2 oz per 100 square feet
Inoculate Seeds (Optional): Use rhizobium inoculant for legumes to boost nitrogen fixation
