?? How to Grow Common Vetch
1. Choose the Right Time to Plant
- Cool Season Crop:
- Spring planting: Sow 2–4 weeks before the last frost.
- Fall planting: Sow 30–60 days before the first frost if used as a winter cover crop.
2. Prepare the Soil
- Soil Type: Loam, clay, or sandy soil
- Soil pH: 6.0–7.0
- Tip: Loosen the top 4–6 inches of soil. Add compost if your soil is poor.
3. Sow the Seeds
- Seeding Depth: ½ to 1 inch (1.2–2.5 cm) deep
- Spacing: Broadcast seeds for cover cropping or space 1–2 inches apart in rows
- Seed Rate (for cover crop): About 40–60 lbs per acre, or 1–2 oz per 100 square feet
- Inoculate Seeds (Optional): Use rhizobium inoculant for legumes to boost nitrogen fixation
4. Watering
- Watering Needs: Medium
- Instructions: Water well after sowing. Keep soil slightly moist during germination (7–14 days). Once established, water during dry periods.
5. Sunlight
- Sun: Full sun to partial shade
- At least 4–6 hours of direct light daily for best growth.
6. Growth and Maintenance
- Support: Not required, but plants can climb if support is available.
- Weed Control: Mulch or light cultivation can reduce weed competition early on.
- Fertilization: Not necessary if soil is reasonably fertile—vetch fixes its own nitrogen.
7. Harvest or Mow
- As a cover crop:
Cut and incorporate into soil before it sets seed (usually at flowering stage).
- As forage:
Harvest before full bloom for best quality forage.
- As seed crop:
Allow to fully mature and dry before harvesting seeds.
?? Tips
- Avoid planting in waterlogged soils.
- Companion plant with oats or rye to help vetch climb and reduce lodging (falling over).
- If you're using it to build soil fertility, wait 2–3 weeks after cutting before planting new crops.
